Maine college roundup: UMaine women's basketball beats Binghamton in regular-season finale

Feb. 25—Adrianna Smith had 31 points and 19 rebounds as the University of Maine women's basketball team beat Binghamton 69-65 in its regular-season finale on Saturday in Orono.

The Black Bears finish 15-13 overall and 11-5 in America East conference play. They will host Binghamton (13-16, 6-10) in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Anne Simon added 18 points and five assists for UMaine.

Jaydn Weltz had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Binghamton.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 96, VERMONT TECH 40: Tara Flanders scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the top-seeded SeaWolves (19-7, 11-3 YSCC) beat the sixth-seeded Knights (6-14, 4-10) in the quarterfinals of the Yankee Small College Conference tournament in South Portland.

Maddy York added 18 points SMCC, which advances to the semifinals on March 4 in Auburn.

UMAINE-AUGUSTA 65, GREAT BAY CC 50: Mariah Dunbar had 22 points to lead the second-seeded Moose (22-6) past the seventh-seeded Herons (7-13) in a YSCC quarterfinal at Auburn.

Alisyn Alley had 13 points for UMaine-Augusta, Kaeti Butterfield chipped in with 12 and Sydney Farrar added 11. The Moose advance to the semifinals on March 4 in Auburn.

Mary Paradis lead Great Bay CC with 18 points, Sydney McCarthy tossed 14, while Madison Lovely pulled down 25 rebounds.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

MAINE 71, BINGHAMTON 67: Gedi Juozapaitis scored five of his 19 points in overtime as the Black Bears (12-16, 6-9 America East) beat the Bearcats (12-16, 8-7) in Binghamton, New York.

Kellen Tynes pulled Maine within one with a layup with 33 seconds left in the second half and Kristians Feierbergs tied it with a foul shot with 11 seconds to force overtime. Jaden Clayton made four free throws in the final 10 seconds to help Maine seal the win.

Tynes added 18 points and Feierbergs had 14 for Maine.

Armon Harried had 22 points and Miles Gibson 16 for Binghamton.

COLBY 66, WILLIAMS 55: Will King scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half as the sixth-seeded Mules (20-6, 5-5 NESCAC) jumped out to a 21-point lead at the half and upset the top-seeded Ephs (22-4, 7-3) in the conference semifinals in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Jack Lawson added 12 points and Max Poulton had 11 for Colby, which advances to the conference final on Sunday against No. 2 Hamilton.

Nate Karren had 15 points for Williams.

GREAT BAY CC 86, UMAINE-AUGUSTA 78: Alex Tavares had 22 points to lead five players in double figures as the Herons (8-7) beat the Moose (8-7) in a Yankee Small College Conference quarterfinal in Auburn.

Elijah Smith had 25 points for UMaine-Augusta. Frasier MacDonald had 21 and Trevor Beals added 12.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 62, VERMONT TECH 60: Jack Pyzynski scored 17 points and the fourth-seeded SeaWolves (17-9) beat the fifth-seeded Knights (10-8) in the Yankee Small College Conference quarterfinals in South Portland.

Thomas Martinotti added 14 points, while DeSean Crowell had 12 points and 15 rebounds for SMCC, which advances to the semifinals on March 4 in Auburn.

MEN'S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 2, TRINITY 1: Chris Brown scored in overtime with an assist from Cam Berube as the seventh-seeded Polar Bears (13-9-3) upset the second-seeded Bantams (16-8-1) in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament in Hartford, Connecticut.

Gabe Shipper scored from Jesse Lycan in the third period to tie it for the Polar Bears advance to the semifinals at Amherst College to face Colby on March 4.

Riley Prattson gave Trinity the lead in the second period.

COLBY 3, HAMILTON 2: Dan Juzych scored in overtime as the fifth-seeded Mules (13-10-2) rallied from two-goals down to beat the fourth-seeded Continentals (13-10-2) in a NESCAC quarterfinal in Clinton, New York.

Hamilton took a 2-0 lead on goals by Ben Zimmerman and Sam MacBean. Colby, which advances to the semifinals at Amherst College to face Bowdoin on March 4, rallied to tie it on second-period goals by Tyler Crist and Alex Bourhas.

Andy Beran had 33 saves for Colby, while Charlie Archer had 30 saves for Hamilton.

UMAINE 2, BOSTON COLLEGE 1: Nolan Renwick scored a power-play goal in the first period and the Black Bears (15-14-5, 9-9-4 Hockey East) held on to beat the Eagles (12-14-6, 7-10-5) in ORono.

Donavan Villeneuve-Houle added a second-period goal for Maine. Cutter Gauthier scored for Boston College.

CURRY 5, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Eelis Laaksonen had two goals and an assist as the second-seeded Colonels (21-4-1) beat the third-seeded Nor'easters (19-6-2) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals in Canton, Massachusetts.

George Vonakis, Nick Favaro and Billy Roche also scored for Curry, which will face Endicott in the conference title game.

Alex Sheehy scored for UNE.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

NORWICH 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Ally Lague scored from Melianne Reynolds and Taylor Girouard with 5:25 to play as the second-seeded Cadets (18-7-2) rallied past the No. 3 Huskies (14-12-1) in a NEHC semifinal in Northfield, Vermont.

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Ally Stymiest scored from Peyton Dukas and Georgie Snow. Norwich, which advances to the final to play Elmira, tied it early in the third on a goal by Ingrid Holstad-Berge.

Haley McKim stopped 44 shots for the Huskies, while Leocodia Clark had 14 saves for the Cadets.

SUFFOLK 6, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Sammy Lassman and Elise Wainwright had two goals apiece as the top-seeded Rams (17-7-2) blanked the fourth-seeded Nor'easters (9-15-3) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinal in East Boston, Massachusetts.

Jenna Caballero and Taylor Nowak also scored for Suffolk.

COLBY 2, TRINITY 1: Meg Rittenhouse scored 10:54 into the second overtime to lift the third-seeded Mules (17-6) past the sixth-seeded Bantams (12-11-1) in a NESCAC tournament quarterfinal game in Waterville.

Colby advances to face No. 2 Hamilton in the semifinals on March 4 in Clinton, New York.

Ethel Wilhelmssson scored in the third period to give Trinity the lead. Beth Sinson tied for Colby, less than five minutes later.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH'S 17, GORDON 5: Lydia Dexter had seven goals and one assist as the Monks (2-0) cruised to a win over the Fighting Scots (2-1) in Standish.

Bridget Collins added three goals and two assists for St. Joseph's, while Carson Battaglia had three goals and one assist. Megan Mourmouras added two goals.

MEN'S LACROSSE

EMERSON 22, ST. JOSEPH'S 9: Jack Burns scored seven goals as the Lions (2-1) beat the Monks (0-2) in Boston.

Xavier Michaud and Tiger Hopkins both scored twice for St. Joseph's.

RIT 22, BATES 10: Luke Pilcher had four goals and two assists as the Tigers (2-0) beat the Bobcats (0-1) in Geneva, New York.

Alex Horowitz, Connor Hartman, Malcolm Klingbell and Denzel Evans each had two goals for Bates.

BASEBALL

BOBCATS SWEEP HIGHLANERS: Brandon Biggane home run sparked a six-run top of the sixth and Bates (2-0) won the second game of a double 8-3 to completed a sweep of Houghton (0-3) in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.

Tylar Attol went 2 for 3 for the Bobcats, with a triple and double, driving in a pair

Dylan Azcarate and Jack Brennan each had two-run singles in the fifth inning as Bates won the opener, 6-1.
