Maine hiker, 70, rescued in Sharon woods

Jun. 13—Rescuers used cell phone GPS coordinates to find a lost hiker from Maine in the woods of Sharon Monday night.

Lane Fisher, 70, of Belfast, Maine, was visiting the Peterborough area and had parked at Casalis State Forest and set off to hike the trails about 5:30 p.m., according to a news release from New Hampshire Fish and Game. As darkness approached, Fisher became lost and called for help.

Fish and Game got a report of a lost hiker about 8:15 p.m. Monday. State police dispatchers were able to provide GPS coordinates for the cell phone used to call 911, and conservation officers found Fisher about a half-hour later.

Rescuers gave Fisher water and a head lamp, and escorted her back to the main road.

Assisting Fish and Game were personnel from Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Peterborough police and the state Division of Emergency Services and Communication (911).

Fish and Game said outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to purchase a Hike Safe card, and to visit hikesafe.com for a list of tips and essential hiking gear.
