Maine man, 62, dies from injuries after Route 4 crash in Sanford: 2nd fatality at site in 8 days

SANFORD, Maine — A local man died in a head-on collision on Route 4 on Monday, in the same spot where a Wells woman lost her life in another traffic accident just last week.

Alan LeBrun, 62, of Sanford, was driving eastward on Route 4 in his Honda CRV when at 7:55 a.m. it struck a Ford F-350 head-on at the intersection of Channel Lane, according to the Sanford Police Department.

Local first responders reported to the scene, where they discovered that LeBrun and the driver of the Ford, Jeffrey Lacourse, 40, of Waterboro, had suffered “significant” injuries, Sanford Assistant Fire Chief Rick Smith said on Monday afternoon.

Two fatal accidents have occurred at this intersection of Channel Lane with Route 4 in South Sanford since Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022.

LeBrun was transported to Southern Maine Health Care’s campus in Sanford.

“Despite life-saving measures, LeBrun died as a result of his injuries,” Sanford Police Lt. Timothy DeHaven said Tuesday.

Lacourse was brought to Maine Medical Center in Portland. On Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson at Maine Medical said Lacourse was in critical condition.

First responders from Acton, Lebanon and Alfred provided station coverage while local personnel responded to the scene. Smith said personnel cleared the scene of the accident at around 9:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to DeHaven.

Also still under investigation, according to Sanford Deputy Chief Timothy Strout: a fatality at the very same intersection just a week earlier.

On Sunday, Aug. 21, Ann Sinclair, 32, of Wells, died in a collision when an eastbound Jeep Wrangler, driven by Cody Michaud, 32, of Sanford, struck her Scion xA head-on.

Michaud was brought to Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Last week, Sanford Police Lt. Matthew Gagne said authorities were continuing their investigation into the accident and were working with the district attorney’s office on the matter.

On Tuesday, Strout said there have been three accidents in the past three years at the intersection of Country Club Road on Route 4 and Channel Lane. The first, back in 2019, was not a fatality, he added.

"There are several crashes on Country Club Road as a whole," Strout added.
