YORK, Maine — New York Post’s legendary gossip columnist Cindy Adams lambasted Mainers for having large behinds, too much beer and no fashion sense in a column that has locals in a frenzy.

“Realtors could establish an entire campsite on the average ass,” wrote Adams in her column in the Post recounting her recent summer vacation in Maine. The city-slicker socialite, who has written her gossip column for the Post since 1979, wrote that Maine was “polite,” “friendly,” “inexpensive,” and loaded with “locals whose behinds overlap the state of Texas all stuffed into shorts.”

Adams, 92, gave a shoutout to both Kennebunkport and Long Sands Beach in York as she made her case for why Maine is anything but civilized compared to New York. “The concept of dressing is only for salad,” she wrote, saying that clothing like L.L. Bean jeans, “crappy sweaters” and “backpacks are considered black tie.”

She really noticed the beer as well.

“Everybody does beer. They probably shower with it,” Adams wrote. If you prefer “French furniture with gilt arms and legs, white linen tablecloths, waiters in tuxes,” she wrote, you won’t find it in Maine.

“Anything you want, except for trees, you have to get in your car to get,” Adams wrote. “I climbed into mine to get back to civilization and New York.”

Mainers raised an eyebrow to the piece when it went live Sunday. The Bangor Daily News editorial board wrote an entire op-ed condemning the piece as “The worst Maine travel piece of the year.” The organization Meet York County posted to its more than 3,000 followers on Facebook to be careful – “New York Post's Cindy Adams may be lost in her BMW trying to exit Maine.” The post included a picture of a highway crossing sign with Adams’ face and the words “ANGRY LADY XING.”

“Household and common items such as beer and flannel clothing have known effects for keeping her at bay,” read the Facebook post.

Adams’ Wikipedia page was also apparently trolled this week: As of Friday her biographical information stated her mother was a “prostitute” among other insults.

Laura Dolce, director of the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce, said Adams may be esteemed on the social scene in New York City, but that she “missed the mark” with Maine. For one, she said, the people she is judging for having large behinds may not be the locals she thinks.

“I'd wager that those were tourists' behinds she was so shocked by — some maybe even from New York,” Dolce said. She also noted how Adams poked at the fact that Maine has “no traffic,” which locals know often is not true on summer weekends.

“She should try inching through Dock Square on an August Saturday,” Dolce said. “But I guess it's better than Manhattan gridlock.”

York Beach Ocean Rescue Operations Manager Jeff Patten found the column mean-spirited. He said having a daily view of Long Sands Beach and having visited many beaches, he does not see too much of a difference in the shape of the beachgoers.

“When I go to Florida, I don’t sit there and go, ‘Wow, what a difference here from our beach in the size of people,’” said Patten. “That’s ridiculous.”

Joe Lipton, who owns hotels like the ViewPoint Hotel and the Stones Throw in York, said he tries not to spend energy thinking about people like Cindy Adams.

“It says more about the writer than our state,” Lipton said of the column. Just the night before, he said he was spending time with individuals from New York and Boston and that his guests were having the time of their life.

“So much so that both of these couples who have been visiting Maine for the last three years bought land to build in York,” Lipton said. “The article that’s written is so ridiculous it shouldn’t even be given any attention at all.”

Former York town manager Steve Burns, who just retired from the town of York after 23 years, felt no hard feelings – even for the remarks about derrieres.

“Who doesn’t like big butts?” Burns asked. “Isn’t that the song?”

Burns suspects Adams is correct Maine is far more casual than New York City, which is exactly why he likes it in Maine. He recommended Adams come back for a beer on him from Southern Maine (SoMe) Brewing Company.

“It’s called microbrews. It’s the new thing. She might have missed it,” Burns said.

At the end of the day, Burns said the piece was merely poking fun at their state and that people might be overacting.

“That was funny,” said Burns after reading the story for the first time. “People need to chill.”
