While there has been praise for the show's performances and style, some critics have taken issue with the series' deeper level of engagement with the historical context.

Here's what they've been saying:

TheWrap

"Weaving sophisticated fashion and one of the most brutal passages in 20th Century Europe, The New Look stares down the past in all its beauty and betrayal. The passionate period saga spurns contemporary cancel culture to get under the perfumed skin of two elite pioneers whose paths diverged and, yet, both ultimately remained fashion bold-faced names long after their deaths."

The Spool

"Todd A Kessler’s new series for Apple TV, The New Look, fashions history and gossip and tells the diverging stories of these designers with a simplicity that blossoms as the series completes its ten-episode parade."

The Hollywood Reporter

"We’re left with the sense that this is history worth knowing — if not for the sake of Christian and Coco’s legacies, then for our own, as we consider our own choices in our own fraught era."

ButWhyTho

"The New Look season 1 will undoubtedly offer something to fashion aficionados and those seeking out greater insight into the designer titans. But the series suffers from the biopic trappings that fail to enliven or engage with the enriching story it’s telling. There’s plenty of material here, but the final product is listless."

The Guardian

"As a whole, The New Look doesn’t amount to enough. You could see it as escapism, but that requires accommodation of the fact that the Holocaust is essentially written out of the story in favour of a rivalry over tulle. At a time when various high-profile institutions issued statements on Holocaust Memorial Day without mentioning Jewish victims, it’s a drama that has landed at just the wrong time. The frocks are lovely though."

The first three episode of The New Look are available to watch on Apple TV+ now with new episodes airing every Wednesday.
