Maize woman, 23, dies after crashing into stopped semi truck along K-96

A 23-year-old Maize woman died after rear-ending a semi truck along Kansas Highway 96 in Reno County on Wednesday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the woman as Jaedyn Douglas.

The crash was reported shortly after noon along westbound K-96 south of Hutchinson. A semi truck was parked in the westbound lanes of K-96 partially blocking the driving lane while helping a stranded motorist, a KHP crash log said.

Douglas was heading heading west on K-96 in a 2023 Kia Sportage when it struck the rear passenger corner of the semi. The Kia spun and ended up in the shoulder of the K-96 lanes, the KHP said.

Douglas died at the scene from her injuries, according to the report.

The driver of the semi, a 21-year-old man from Pretty Prairie, Kansas, received suspected minor injuries and was taken to Hutchinson Regional Hospital. He was not inside the semi when the crash happened.

Reno County borders Sedgwick County to the northwest.
