Another tragic Texas head-on crash: U.S. 67 wreck kills 6. What we know

Six people were dead and three were injured after a Tuesday evening rush-hour crash in Johnson County, multiple outlets reported.

The Texas Department of Public Safety posted on X, formerly Twitter, that there was a major crash along U.S. 67 near Nemo, about 50 miles southwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The Dallas Morning News reported that six people riding in the same vehicle died, victims ranging from 9 to 64 years old. Additionally, three people were taken to a Fort Worth hospital by helicopter, a DPS spokesperson told the Morning News.

Wednesday's release identified the driver of the van as Rushil Barri, 28, of Irving, Texas. He died in the crash along with five other passengers from Alpharetta, Georgia.

The other deceased were not identified as officials work to notify their next of kin. However, officials released the following information about them:

  • Female, 36 years old.

  • Male, 64 years old.

  • Female, 60 years old.

  • Male, 10 years old.

  • Female, 9 years old.

Who was involved in the crash?

The identities of the victims have not been disclosed. DPS did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for information.

The two vehicles involved were a Chevrolet pickup and a Honda Odyssey, according to the Morning News.

Where is Johnson County?

Johnson County is slightly southwest of Dallas County. Its largest city is Cleburne.

The county had a population of more than 195,000 as of July 2022.

U.S. 67 is a major national highway in Texas that runs from Texarkana at the Arkansas state line to west of Presidio at the U.S.-Mexico border.

It was designed in 1926 and is about 640 miles long.

Dixie Chicks singer dies in head-on collision in Texas

Laura Lynch, a founding member of the Dixie Chicks band, died Friday in a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle attempting to pass another on an undivided highway near El Paso, DPS Sgt. Eliot Torres confirmed to USA TODAY. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said, noting that the investigation of the accident is ongoing.

In a statement posted to Instagram, the band, now known as the Chicks, remembered Lynch.

"Laura was a bright light. … Her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band. Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band," the band wrote.
