Major fire burning commercial building on Ocean Avenue in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD - Two people have been injured in a major fire at a vacant commercial building on Ocean Avenue on Monday evening, according to police.

The two unnamed people, believed to be squatters, suffered injuries that required further evaluation and medical treatment at a local hospital, said Lakewood Police Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith, a department spokesman.

Staffordsmith said that police, fire and EMS first responders remained all on the scene of the blaze at 133 Ocean Ave. in the township.

The building — which is for sale — once housed a building supply store and included a lumberyard shed. The site is located adjacent to the old Central Railroad of New Jersey line that once carried the storied Blue Comet train between Jersey City and Atlantic City in the early 20th century.

The public is being told to avoid the area at Ocean and South Park avenues.

Smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Seaside Park, across Barnegat Bay.
