On Monday afternoon, San Bernardino County Fire personnel responded to a major gas line leak in the Phelan area.

Just before 3 p.m., county sheriff’s officials reported on the online platform "X" that the fire department requested assistance after construction caused a major gas line leak on Baldy Mesa Road and Mesa Street in Phelan.

The residential and open-desert-space area is north of Bald Mesa Elementary School.

“The gas company is aware and is working on the line, and we have responded to assist if needed,” sheriff’s officials stated. “If you live in the area, please keep your windows and doors shut.”

The following roads will remain closed until further notice: Baldy Mesa Road, between Smoke Tree and Solano. Also,  Mesa Street is east and west of Baldy Mesa Road.

Southwest Gas

Southwest Gas spokesman Stephen Miller told the Daily Press on Monday night that gas crews were working on repairs caused by a third-party digging in the area.

Miller added that gas was turned off and that the area is secure.

He also reminded those planning a digging project to call 811 to ensure underground utilities are marked safely prior to beginning work.

Schools

After the gas leak alert, Snowline Joint Unified School District officials stated that Baldy Mesa Elementary School and Quail Valley Middle School were immediately put on Shelter In Place.

Snowline JUSD Police Department met with the sheriff department’s incident command, and Snowline was instructed to dismiss Baldy Mesa students at their regular time while keeping Quail Valley on Shelter In Place.

Quail Valley was released at their regular dismissal time.

Buses from Baldy Mesa Elementary were late as a northbound section of Baldy Mesa Road was closed due to the incident.

No other information was available on Monday afternoon.
