Major Long Branch power outage pinned on equipment failure, JCP&L says
LONG BRANCH - Equipment failure at Jersey Central Power & Light's Bath Avenue substation was behind Friday night's outage that plunged much of the city into darkness.
The electrical failure trapped people in elevators and caused other issues, police said. As of 8:15 p.m. Friday, an estimated 8,475 JCP&L customers were without power.
JCP&L spokesman Christopher Hoenig said power was fully restored at 10:45 p.m. Friday, putting the lights back on for the remaining 300 customers who were still out.
Long Branch Mayor John Pallone said in an email, "I want to thank JCP&L as well as our police, fire, OEM and EMS officials for their professionalism during the outage."
The outage was the result of the failure of subtransmission equipment at the Bath Avenue substation, Hoenig said. These high-voltage lines connect transmission lines to the utility's distribution network. It's not yet known what caused the equipment failure, the spokesman said.
