Majority of Americans want Trump removed: poll

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll on Friday (January 8) shows a majority of Americans want President Donald Trump immediately removed from office after he encouraged a protest at the U.S. Capitol this week that escalated into a deadly riot.

However, most of the 57% supporting Trump's removal were Democrats, while Republicans were much more supportive of Trump finishing the last two weeks of his term.

But nearly 70% of Americans surveyed said they disapproved of Trump's actions in the run-up to Wednesday's assault.

At a rally earlier in the day, Trump had encouraged thousands of his followers to march to the Capitol and "fight."

The national opinion survey also showed that seven out of 10 of those who voted for Trump last November opposed the actions of his hardcore supporters who broke into the Capitol.

The poll comes as several lawmakers from both parties joined the call for his removal on Friday, including Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski, and Ben Sasse.

Meanwhile, Democrats in the House of Representatives have already drafted articles of impeachment against the president, and say a House impeachment vote could come as early as next week.
