Malibu restaurant owner killed alongside son in suspected drunk driving crash

The owner of a swanky Malibu restaurant popular with celebrities was killed alongside his son in a fiery crash after a suspected drunk driver slammed his vehicle into their 1960s-era Mustang.

Kevin Gonzalez was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed on Mulholland Drive on Wednesday around 9 p.m. when his Toyota Camry rear-ended the vintage Mustang, KTLA reported. Both vehicles immediately burst into flames.

Firefighters responded to the scene and were able to quickly contain the blaze, but they were unable to save the occupants inside the Mustang, who have since been identified as Andrea Bullo, the 60-year-old owner of Moonshadows Malibu, and his 13-year-old son, Marco. They were both pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

The popular restaurant, purchased by Bullo two years ago, is on Yelp’s list of 100 Place to Dine in the U.S. It was closed Thursday in the wake of the brutal car crash.

Bullo’s friend and fellow restaurant owner Michael Cardenas left flowers outside Moonshadows Malibu Wednesday night. He said he’d been planning a trip to Italy with Bullo and their children prior to the tragedy.

“He had great integrity,” Cardenas told NBC Los Angeles. “He was honest to others and a family man. Just a good human being.”

Police said Gonzalez managed to escape the collision with minor injuries. He was spotted performing a sobriety test at the scene of the crash. He was booked for two counts of murder and is being held on $4 million bond.
