Mallard Creek names new boys basketball coach, coming from rival school

Michael McNeil is the new head boys basketball coach at Mallard Creek.

McNeil had been the head coach at Hopewell High School for the past four years until he resigned in April.

He’d coached the Titans since the start of the 2016-17 season. His teams went 12-13, 19-9, 16-11 and 6-19, and he was named the 2017-18 I-MECK conference coach of the year.

At Mallard Creek, he replaces Jabarr Adams, who left to become head coach at West Cabarrus, a new school opening this fall. Adams coached the Mavericks for two seasons, going 22-32.

McNeil will try to direct the Mavericks to their first winning season since 2016-17.

“He’s excited to begin his first season at Mallard Creek,” Mavericks athletic director Quante’ Speight said, “and establish a distinguished culture of sustained excellence. His favorite aspect of coaching is the ability to use sports as a mechanism to teach athletes how to overcome adversity, and be successful in life. Coach McNeil has officially joined the Creek Life.”
