The Capitol Police Flex Unit conducted a search warrant for drugs at a Jackson home Saturday, July 8, and came away with a not only cache of drugs but also 24 malnourished dogs.

Since then, 13 of the dogs, nine adults and three puppies, have received medical treatment at Cheshire Abbey, an animal shelter in Jackson, officials said. The other 11 dogs remain at Animal Rescue Fund in Jackson.

One puppy had to be euthanized, according to published reports.

The dogs were believed to be cane corso, which an Italian breed of mastiff, or mixed cane corso.

Police officers called other agencies, including officials with Madison Police Department, Rankin County Animal Control, Cheshire Abbey and Animal Rescue Fund, to assist in rescuing and relocating the dogs.

Owner and Founder of Cheshire Abbey, Chrissy Cheshire, said the dogs were in terrible condition when they arrived at the facility.

"One of the adult dogs suffered a broken neck and couldn't move," Cheshire said. "Another adult dog suffered a broken jaw in two places and a broken pelvis, which required emergency surgery. The cost of that surgery was from $2,000 to $2,500, but thankfully $2,500 was generously donated. We also received two puppies shaking and trying to scavenge for any food source. All the dogs were in bad condition, but only two required more immediate attention."

Cheshire said all of adult dogs were aggressive and she attributed that to their having been in such a devastating environment.

"Due to the current conditions of the dogs and short staffing at Cheshire Abbey, all of the adult's dogs will be transported up North to Must Love Corso's animal shelter in Ohio," Cheshire said. "I am hopeful the dogs will make a full recovery. Due to donations, we are covering the cost of vetting, getting them all fixed, boarding, food, health certificates, the first month of prevention and transportation soon. I will be driving the dogs personally along with someone else. The dogs are quite big, which requires 42-inch kennels."

Cheshire said donations to help cover additional costs can be sent through Venmo to Cheshireabbey or via PayPal to cheshireabbey@gmail.com or by calling 601-345-8146.
