Saturday roundup: GlenOak boys basketball opens season in style; Green girls knock off Jackson
PLAIN TWP. — A close game around halftime quickly turned into a rout Saturday afternoon as host GlenOak beat Alliance 87-56 in the Golden Eagles boys basketball season opener.
Junior guard Ja'Corey Lipkins led GlenOak with 26 points — 11 of them in a 29-point third quarter for the Golden Eagles. Sophomore forward Reese Zerger totaled 23 points and eight rebounds as GlenOak shot 57.4% from the floor
"You have Ja'Corey doing what he's doing, I think Reese Zerger is going to be really special, the young point guard Bryce Broom played great and the kids we brought off the bench played well," GlenOak head coach Rick Hairston said. "Everybody did what they were supposed to do. I'm happy we could get a win against what I think is a very good team and a well-coached team."

Leading 32-30 in the final seconds of the first half, Broom found Zerger for a GlenOak bucket in the lane. Junior Jalen McElroy quickly got a steal after the inbound pass and scored at the buzzer to put the Golden Eagles up 36-30.

GlenOak then opened the third on a 15-4 run to blow the game open. Alliance committed 10 of its 22 turnovers in the third quarter.
McElroy scored 10 points, while the sophomore Broom dished off four assists. Guard Kenny Scott, another 10th grader, added four points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Zerger, Broom and Scott all started for GlenOak along with Lipkins and senior Ben Davis (six points).
"As talented as those sophomores are, you always worry how they're going to play when you put them in the arena against a very well-coached team and a team I think is pretty talented," Hairston said. "But I was impressed. They weren't fazed by the moment and they made plays all over the place."
Senior center Diego Allen, playing off the bench for "off-the-court" reasons, led Alliance (2-1) with 13 points for first-year head coach Sean Weatherspoon. Junior guard Ramhir Hawkins scored 11 points, while freshman guard J.R. Jackson added 10.
Alliance, which scored 90 points during a win Friday night against Salem, was without senior Kayden Davis. The Youngstown State football recruit was on a visit to the Penguins on Saturday.
"I think it's good for us to see this level," Weatherspoon said. "We knew coming in GlenOak was going to play hard as heck. That's a staple of how Hairston runs his program. We saw on film how hard they're going to play, and with a guard like Ja'Corey Lipkins, man, it's tough. If you're not ready to play, not getting back defensively, not sprinting back and doing what you're supposed to do, it's going to be a long night. That's what happened in the second half."

Green girls earn Federal League win at Jackson
JACKSON TWP. — Green used a 17-0 run from the middle of the second quarter to the middle of the third quarter to take control during a 41-32 Federal League girls basketball win at Jackson on Saturday afternoon.
Riley Chmielewski's 10 points led the Bulldogs (3-0, 2-0) in a matchup of defending district champions. Green turned a 19-12 deficit into a 29-19 lead with its big run Saturday.
Leena Patibandla totaled 10 points and 12 rebounds for Jackson (3-1, 1-1), which beat Green in a regional semifinal last year.
Jackson senior Lauren Pallotta, a University of Dayton recruit, left the game with an ankle injury at the 2:01 mark of the first quarter and did not return.

Friday roundup: Lake pulls away from Perry; Jackson, McKinley also gain Federal League boys basketball wins
PERRY TWP. — Junior guard Chance Casenhiser scored a game-high 22 points and Lake pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 70-64 win at Perry in the Federal League boys basketball opener for both teams.
In a tied game late in the third quarter, senior Caleb Collins came up with a steal and scored at the other end to put Lake up 42-40 entering the fourth.
The Blue Streaks (1-1, 1-0) never trailed again as they stretched their advantage to as many as 11 in the final period.

"That was a good game for us," Lake head coach Tom McBride said. "I thought we faced a lot of adversity early with foul trouble. Some kids really stepped up, dug their heels in and executed in a lot of different ways in the middle quarters."
Collins scored all 11 of his points in the second half to go with a game-high 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.
"He just does so much for us," McBride said. "He's the guy that solidifies our defense. He's always in the right position. He's kind of the heart and guts of the team. Then when we needed him to score a few times in the second half, he was scoring or making a great pass."
Senior Landyn Roth scored 12 points for Lake, while junior Drew Gullett added three 3-pointers and 10 points.
Senior Zander Sabin scored 21 points and dished off four assists for Perry (1-2, 0-1). Sabin scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, which included a 12-for-12 performance from the foul line. Junior Peyton Wengerd hit four 3s for his 12 points, while senior Joel Brown added 11 points and six rebounds.

Perry trailed 29-21 early in the third quarter, then used a 14-2 run to lead 35-31 midway through the period.
Coming off 36 points in last week's season-opening loss at Mentor, Casenhiser battled foul problems all night for his 22 points (10 of them in the fourth quarter) to go with four assists.
"I was really proud of Chance," McBride said. "I thought his attitude was everything for us going into the fourth. ... A year ago, I don't know if he would've had that grit to come back in and give us that and have the great attitude that he did for his teammates."
