What would Mama say? Emeralds and blue jeans

Diamonds are supposed to be a girl's best friend. I have several of these items. Mine are better known as zircons. In other words, mine look similar to diamonds but are not that gem.

I have a delightful strand of pearls that are so long, they reach the floor when I wear them. They are similar to my diamonds. They look pretty and are worth about $3.

I have a lovely pair of dangly emerald earrings I adore. Daddy gave them to me for my 40th birthday, which is in May. Emeralds are the birthstone for those born in May. That might be why I'm partial to them.

There are other gems I think are pretty, especially opals. I found a list of these different colors. Each one is magnificent. Several of them have intriguing names like moon yellow, bubble gum, angel skin and unicorn purple. The list contained 36 names for the different colors of opals.

I don't own any opals for several reasons including the fact that opals are the birthstones for October born babies. My sister Jeanne was born in October. I feel sort of like that means opals belong to her.

Pink tourmaline is another gem recognized as an October birthstone. The colors for pink tourmaline are light pink and hot pink.

Other months with more than one birthstone — August and December. August's birthstones are peridot, spinel and sardonyx. Peridot is a green that comes in shades of green from a yellowish green to greenish yellow to brownish green.

Spinels come in a variety of reds and some of these can be almost orange. There are also blue spinels; and, these are very rare.

Sardonyx can be red and white or black and white.

I wish I had known this earlier when my daughter, born in August, was a kid. She has never really liked peridot. Now I know she has options.

December's birthstones are blue zircon, tanzanite and turquoise. Researching blue zircon, I discovered zircon is a naturally occuring stone; and, zircon can be red, green, brown, yellow, orange and colorless. Tanzanite comes in a mix of blue and violet.

Turquoise can be different shades of blue and can be deep dark green to a yellowish green.

The birthstone for January is garnet. I had always thought garnets are just red; but, they can also be orange, pink, green, black and honey brown.

February's stone is amethyst. I love this gem. This stone is all sorts of purple. March has aquamarine. April is diamond. June is pearls. July has ruby. September is blue sapphire. November's stone is citrine.

All of these jewels are really beautiful. I love getting all jeweled up. I haven't had a chance to get all dressed up; so, I think wearing a lot of jewels does not coordinate well with blue jeans.

Emeralds, now, emeralds go with everything, including jeans.
