Mama raccoon bunks in California chimney to give birth. Hear babies chitter for her
Four baby raccoons were trapped inside a California chimney after their mom crawled inside to give birth, video shows.
A photo taken from the roof of the Upland home shows the mama raccoon looking up at the camera from inside the chimney, according to a video San Bernardino County Fire posted on Facebook.
Fire and animal control officials worked for two hours on July 6 to safely extract the newborns from the home’s fireplace, officials said in a news release.
But the mom stayed just out of a rescuer’s reach halfway up the chimney. So rescuers set the babies’ cage on the roof near the chimney, hoping the newborns’ chitters and cries would lure the mom out of the chimney to reunite with her babies on her own.
That didn’t work, officials said. Rescuers tried again a few nights later, but the mom had moved on by that point.
The team took the babies to a wildlife rescue facility, where they will be cared for until they’re old enough to be released back into the hills near where they were born, the video says.
