Man, 21, fatally shot in the head during gunfight outside Brooklyn housing project

A 21-year-old man was fatally shot in the head during a gunfight outside a Brooklyn housing project, police said Monday.

Deshawn Herbert and his killer shot at each other in front of NYCHA’s Unity Plaza on Georgia Ave. near Blake Ave. in East New York about 3:50 a.m. Saturday.

A ShotSpotter alert, the NYPD’s high-tech sensors that can detect gunfire citywide, drew cops to the scene.

Medics rushed Herbert to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died. He lived just a couple blocks from where he was shot.

Herbert trained as a wrestler from a young age, competing at local tournaments.

“He was a talented and athletic wrestler,” trainer Jamie Lupole wrote on Facebook. “What I remember best of him was his infectious smile and fabulous sense of humor.”

“We lost a beautiful person,” family friend Jennifer Bonjean posted on Facebook Saturday after Herbert was killed.

“The funny, talented, and sweet young man Deshawn Herbert who we have known since middle school when he and my son became wrestling teammates. He came over yesterday evening long enough to make us all laugh — as he always did — and my parting words to him were ‘be careful.’ He died senselessly last night.”

Herbert’s killer has not been caught. The gun battle was caught on video obtained by cops, sources said.
