Man, 28, shot dead on Bronx street

A 28-year-old man was shot dead on a Bronx street, police said Tuesday.

Anthony Castillo was shot in the upper body on Morris Ave. near E. 181st St. in Fordham Heights about 10:55 p.m. Monday.

Medics rushed Castillo, who lived in the Longwood section of the Bronx, to St. Barnabas Hospital but he could not be saved.

Citywide, homicides this year through Sunday were down 15%, with 40 slayings so far this year compared to 47 by the same point last year.

But shootings, including instances in which the victims survived, continue to rise, with 136 people shot this year, 18% more than the 115 by this time last year.
