Man, 67, dies in house fire on Indianapolis' northeast side

Update: The fire was determined to be accidental, according to information released by the Indianapolis Fire Department on Sept. 21, 2023.

One man was killed in a house fire that broke out on the northeast side of Indianapolis Monday night, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 3900 block of Devon Drive after a fire alarm was set off at 9:23 p.m. They found smoke from the fire in the area.

A few minutes after arriving, crews were informed someone was trapped inside the single-story home. A 67-year-old man was found in the home and pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Arthur Wendell Corbitt by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Corbitt’s niece, who owns the home, escaped the fire after trying to extinguish it and get her uncle out. The woman was not injured in the fire.

Crews had the fire under control about 15 minutes after arriving and no firefighters were injured. The department has not released information on the cause of the fire.

The fire district saw six people killed in fires in 2022. Nine people, including Corbitt, have died in fires so far this year.
