Man, 80, found dead after fire at West Palm Beach assisted-living residence

WEST PALM BEACH — An 80-year-old man died early Wednesday after a fire in his room at an assisted-living residence in West Palm Beach, city police said.

Paramedics declared Andre Belanger dead at Colonial Assisted Living at Congress Avenue and Presidential Way, north of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of his death.

First responders learned of the fire shortly before 6 a.m. Heavy smoke stopped the medical staff at the residence from reaching the victim, police said.

Inspectors from the West Palm Beach Fire Department and detectives from the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives Investigations are trying to determine what caused the fire, police said.
