Man accused of shooting woman in face has seven felony convictions

A 40-year-old man accused of shooting his girlfriend in the nose Tuesday morning during an argument at an East Bremerton residence is prohibited from possessing firearms.

The victim had been dropped off at St. Michael’s Medical Center shorlty after 6 a.m. with the bullet still lodged in her face. She told investigators that Sonny Lee Belgard Jr., 40, had become upset because she went to the kitchen to make food and he didn’t know where she had gone, according to court documents filed in Kitsap County Superior Court.

Belgard pointed the gun at her face so she ducked. When she stood back up he fired, the woman told Kitsap County sheriff's office investigators.

Witnesses at the house on the 3300 block of NE Quinault Drive told detectives the woman screamed in pain and Belgrade said he was sorry and didn’t mean to shoot her.

“I’m sorry,” Belgard said, according to a witness. “I don’t know what to do.”

A person at the house “eventually” drove the woman to the hospital, a detective wrote in court documents.

The woman described the gun as a small revolver Belgard usually carries in his waistband, though he is prohibited from possessing firearms due to seven felony convictions, according to court documents.

The bullet resulted in “complicated facial fractures” and took off a piece of the woman’s nose, detectives wrote.

Detectives were unable to find Belgard after the shooting and are searching for him.
