Man accused of stealing car at Carmax arrested

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is now in custody after police say he stole a car parked at Carmax in Northeast Memphis last year.

Dekerian Thornton, 25, is charged with theft of a motor vehicle $10,000-$60,000, possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, possession of a controlled substance: marijuana, and violation of registration.

On December 3, 2023, officers say they responded to Carmax on Highway 64 around 5:40 p.m. regarding a motor vehicle theft.

The victim stated he parked his black Dodge Charger in the parking lot of Carmax before going inside. When he came back outside, his car was missing.

On February 28, 2024, officers say they saw the Charger in the 2700 Block of South Mendenhall Road in Fox Meadows. The car was reportedly speeding and driving recklessly.

Just a short distance away, officers located the vehicle in the 2700 block of Meadowlake Drive.

That is when Thornton got out of the Charger and went inside a house. When he came back outside, he was immediately taken into custody.

Police say Thornton was armed with a black Glock 19 .9mm and a loaded Micro Draco 7.62 rifle was found inside the home. Thornton also had a key fob that went to the Charger clipped to his pants.

A “felony amount” of marijuana was found inside of the Charger, reports state.

Dekerian Thornton is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
