Man airlifted to hospital after shootout with Suffolk police

A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries Wednesday evening after a shootout with Suffolk police.

Officers had gone to the 5500 block of Godwin Boulevard and Route 10 looking for the man, who the department said was wanted in Smithfield on charges of burglary, discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling, malicious shooting and displaying a firearm in a threatening manner, according to a police news release.

They found him with a gun, and "shots were exchanged,” according to the statement.

No officers were injured, but the man was airlifted by Nightingale to a local hospital with serious gunshot wounds, police said.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, with pay, while internal affairs and criminal investigations are conducted.

No further details were immediately available.
