Man allegedly carjacked a vehicle at Hampton Beach with a woman and child inside

David Tayes, 46, of Baldwin, Maine, was initially charged with two counts of kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle and reckless conduct.

HAMPTON BEACH — A Maine man is being held without bail after he allegedly carjacked and drove off with a vehicle still occupied by a woman and child.

David Tayes, 46, of Baldwin, Maine, is being held at Rockingham County Jail in waiting arraignment in Superior Court on four felony charges: two counts of kidnapping and one count each of theft of a motor vehicle and reckless conduct, according to Hampton police Deputy Chief Alex Reno.

Reno said at about 11:55 a.m. on Friday, area police received two separate 911 calls reporting the carjacking of a Dodge Nitro that had been parked on the north side of the Underwood Memorial Bridge.

“There were two women in the vehicle,” Reno said. “When the woman driving got out, the man jumped in with the other woman still in the passenger side and an infant in the back seat. He took off at a high rate of speed, heading south over the bridge on Ocean Boulevard (Route 1A).”

Both women called 911 to report the incident, Reno said.

According to Reno, the vehicle proceeded at speeds fast enough to endanger the lives and safety of the public, as well as those still in the vehicle.

When Tayes reached the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 286 and 1A in Seabrook, Reno said, the female passenger reached over and threw the car into park, warning the alleged carjacker she had called the police.

He subsequently jumped out of the vehicle and fled, Reno said, and the woman slid into the driver seat and drove the car and child back to Hampton.

Reno said Seabrook police officers responded promptly and located Tayes a short time later in the area. Seabrook officers took him into custody at 12:20 p.m. and returned him to Hampton’s jurisdiction, which is where the alleged carjacking took place.

Tayes was booked on the four felony counts at Hampton Police Department and transported to Rockingham County Jail, for arraignment on Monday, Reno said.

Reno said both women and the child were unharmed.
