Man arrested after allegedly using a mailbox flag as a weapon

NORTH LOGAN, Utah (ABC4) — A man was arrested in North Logan early Monday morning after allegedly using a mailbox flag as a weapon during a physical altercation on Sunday.

In a probable cause statement from the Cache County First District Court, the man, identified as Ross Barton Nelson, 35, was arrested for aggravated assault.

According to the affidavit, officers from the North Park Police Department were responding to a physical dispute in North Logan, where the victim told dispatch he was attacked but reportedly refused to meet officers in front of his house for fear he would be shot at.

The victim told officers that Nelson ran up to him with a weapon and stabbed him, according to the affidavit, and the victim had wounds on his chest and his wrist and there was “blood all over the victim.”

According to the probable cause statement, the victim was dropping off a coworker at her house when Nelson allegedly flipped him off.

The victim told officers he got out of his vehicle to apologize for “an issue from a couple months earlier” before Nelson reportedly lunged at the victim, according to documents.

Nelson told officers he had broken a red metal flag off of a nearby mailbox in order to “protect himself” and admitted he was in an altercation with the victim, according to the affidavit.

Nelson also reportedly told officers the victim called him a slur in the past and “he couldn’t let it go,” according to the probable cause statement. Nelson initially fled the scene before later being arrested and taken to the police department.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
