Man arrested in New Britain in connection with M&T Bank robbery in Plainville

A man was arrested in New Britain in connection with a bank robbery in Plainville on Monday, according to the Plainville Police Department.

Police said a man entered the M&T Bank on East Street in Plainville on Monday after 12:30 p.m. and gave a note to a teller. The note read, “This is a robbery, give me all your money and no one will get hurt.” Officers said the man did not display a weapon or a firearm.

Once the bank teller provided the suspect with money from the cash drawer, the suspect fled on foot toward Plainville High School and Linden Street Elementary, police said. Both schools were placed into lockdown while police looked for the suspect.

The suspect was described as a man around 5 feet 5 and 120 pounds with a long gray beard, wearing a gray sweatshirt, red knit hat, black pants, brown boots and sunglasses, police said.

While investigating the scene, police said they found a hospital wristband that had been cut off on the counter near where the robbery occurred. The wristband belonged to Robert Jutras, 59, who is reportedly well-known to Plainville police and fit the suspect’s description.

Police obtained information that the suspect fled toward a white Ford camper at a nearby side street. Police said Jutras owns a white Ford camper and they put out the vehicle and plate number to surrounding jurisdictions.

New Britain police located the camper on Fairview Street in New Britain shortly after. There was no one in the camper when police arrived, but officers learned he was hiding inside of a common hallway of a three-family home.

New Britain and Plainville officers arrested him. He was charged with third-degree robbery and fifth-degree larceny, according to court records.

He was held on a $150,000 bond and appeared in New Britain Superior Court on Tuesday.
