Man arrested in burglary, sexual battery was on probation for past sexual assault

A man accused of burglarizing a woman’s apartment and sexually battering her has been identified and arrested seven weeks after the crime.

The victim was in the bedroom of her apartment in the 5900 block of Northeast 18th Avenue about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 when an armed man walked in her front door and into her bedroom and sexually battered her, Fort Lauderdale Police said. He then fled on foot through the complex’s hallway.

In the immediate aftermath of the assault, police were trying to identify him without enough information to create a composite sketch and without any video they could publicly release.

Lamont Mayweather, 37, was identified as the suspect through a DNA match in the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System, called CODIS. It is not immediately clear when Mayweather was identified, but Fort Lauderdale Police announced in a news release Monday that their Fugitive Unit arrested him Friday.

He was arrested without incident at his job, a brick paving and hardscape product manufacturer, in Pompano Beach, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Mayweather is facing charges of sexual battery with a deadly weapon, burglary with battery, armed burglary of a dwelling, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony probation violation for a previous aggravated child abuse charge, Broward Sheriff’s Office jail records show.

Mayweather was sentenced in May 2019 to seven years in prison for aggravated child abuse. A probable cause affidavit said he sexually assaulted a child who was under 12 years old who was playing outside in an apartment complex in Pompano Beach where he did not live.

He was released from prison in April 2022, having received jail credit time for over 3 years of his sentence. His felony probation is scheduled to end in 2030, Florida Department of Corrections inmate records say. Mayweather was also previously sentenced to prison on drug-related charges.

As of Monday afternoon, Mayweather is held in the Broward Main Jail without bond.
