Man arrested in connection with road rage incident involving a gun with 5-month-old in car

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a road rage incident in January that led to the suspect discharging his firearm on George Washington Memorial Highway, it said. The suspect, however, told 10 On Your Side that his alleged action was in self-defense.

According to officials, on Jan. 27 at approximately 6:18 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 6300 block of George Washington Memorial Highway for reports of a road rage incident that resulted in a shooting.

The victim, 50, told deputies that the suspect’s vehicle was driving recklessly. The suspect then followed the victim’s vehicle closely behind while flashing its lights.

Eventually, the suspect pulled up beside the victim’s vehicle, where he then discharged a firearm, according to deputies.

Initial investigation revealed that a 5-month-old baby was inside the suspect’s vehicle during the incident.

No injuries were reported, and the victim’s vehicle sustained damage from the shooting.

The suspect, 27-year-old Dylan Hicks, was later arrested and charged with maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle and felony child neglect.

10 On Your Side reached out to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office and learned Hicks was arrested two days after the incident. He later bonded out of jail. Our news team found Hicks at his Mathews County home. He called this a self-defense situation, and said the other truck was ramming into his car.

“I mean the news kind of portrayed [it] in a bad light,” Hicks said. “It was a defensive situation. I’m not out here wishing ill-intent on the public or anything like that, I’m not a crazy person. I just was willing to defend my family.”

Deputies and Hicks both tell 10 On Your Side that he still has custody of his 5-month-old son. He was in the car with him at the time. Deputies did confirm that Child Protective Services is involved.
