Man arrested after disturbance prompts Marion County Courthouse lockdown

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man was tased and arrested on Wednesday after refusing to get out of a tent in front of the Marion County Courthouse, Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 7:30 a.m., Judicial Security Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office contacted 54-year-old James Boyles who told authorities he had a gun and refused to exit the tent, officials said.

Officials placed the front entrance of the courthouse on lockdown as law enforcement from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department, and Oregon State Police responded to the incident.

A trained negotiator from the sheriff’s office tried to get Boyles to surrender peacefully, but after he refused to surrender, Boyles was tased and taken into custody, authorities said.

Boyles was evaluated by medics at the scene as a precaution, officials report – noting no firearms were recovered.

Boyles was lodged at the Marion County Jail for several charges including menacing, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, obstructing judicial administration, and second-degree trespass.

Boyles is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 15.
