Documents: Man charged with killing pregnant woman struck officer's vehicle during chase

A 22-year-old man is facing charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman in Avondale.

Miquan Barfield was arrested Thursday on a murder warrant after a police chase, officials said.

Nia Booker, 34, died Aug. 5, the day of the shooting, at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to the Hamilton County Coroner's Office.

Doctors were able to deliver Booker's baby girl. The infant was still intensive care Friday at a local hospital, Booker's mother, Darlene Booker Powell, told The Enquirer.

"She's fighting for her life," Booker Powell said.

Booker was in the passenger seat of a car and three of her children were in the backseat, according to Booker Powell, when a gunman pulled up and fired several shots into the passenger side. Family members don't believe she was the intended target.

The children were not injured.

Cincinnati police reported that just before 5:30 p.m. Aug. 5, officers responded to a Shotspotter alert and 911 call about a shooting in the 400 block of Rockdale Avenue. When they arrived, no victim was found, officials said, because Booker had been driven to the hospital.

Court documents say Barfield intentionally struck an officer's vehicle with his SUV as police chased him, and that he "put numerous lives at risk." Two other vehicles also were struck.

Barfield is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center. He also faces multiple charges in connection with the chase.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call police at 513-352-3542.
