Man arrested in Latrobe shooting of friend previously served time in 2015 beating death

Sep. 7—A Greensburg man accused of shooting a longtime friend in Latrobe on Sunday previously served jail time in connection with a 2015 fatal beating, according to court records.

Malik Crosby, 24, was arraigned Friday on attempted homicide and related charges in the Chestnut Street shooting that police said happened after the wounded man assaulted a woman at the apartment they were visiting.

The woman drove him around 9:30 a.m. to Independence Health Latrobe Hospital emergency room with a gunshot wound to the stomach, police said. He refused to tell investigators who shot him or where the shooting happened, according to court papers.

Police said they examined surveillance video and posted on the department's Facebook page a photo of the woman and the black car she drove to the hospital, seeking information on her identity. The woman went to the police station shortly afterward and claimed to know nothing about the shooting, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies Wednesday told Latrobe police they had information that Crosby, who had a warrant out for his arrest, might be with the woman who drove the wounded man to the hospital, according to court papers.

While police were serving the warrant, they reported seeing a sweatshirt that contained a gun being tossed out of an apartment window. Crosby told investigators he got mad that the man assaulted the woman and shot him, according to court papers. The woman corroborated the story. The wounded man was transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital for surgery.

Police said they seized a stolen handgun, ammunition and suspected heroin/fentanyl. Crosby is not permitted to have a handgun because of a past felony conviction.

A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 18. Crosby was denied bail and was being held at the Westmoreland County Prison. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records.

The shooting came more than eight years after Allegheny County authorities said Crosby and another teen fatally beat 16-year-old Nicholas Grant at a Carrick group home on Jan. 10, 2015. Crosby served almost 27 months in jail on an involuntary manslaughter charge and 18 months of probation.

He was released from jail in April 2017. After a few run-ins with police in the following years, Crosby was sentenced to state prison for 15 months to three years plus two years of probation in 2021 on aggravated assault and related charges, according to online court records.

Greensburg police said he fought with and spit on them and made threats while they took him into custody in January 2021 after he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend.

He was paroled nine months ago, according to state prison records.
