Police: Man arrested, shot Bloomington woman in face, chest during alleged drug deal

A 21-year-old man is charged with attempted murder and criminal recklessness, accused of shooting a woman three times outside an apartment on Bloomington's north side on June 14.

Tavarous D. Roney, 21, 1150 S. Clarizz Blvd., was booked into the Monroe County Jail Tuesday on the two felony charges. His bond was set at $75,500.

Court documents filed in the case say the victim and a 17-year-old boy allegedly arranged to buy a half pound of marijuana from Roney, then stole it from him without paying the agreed on $600.

Police say the juvenile brandished what appeared to be a handgun during the incident and as Roney drove away, he fired multiple bullets at the woman, who was standing outside her apartment in the 1200 block of North Maple Street.

She was struck in the face and in the chest, and taken to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of what were described as serious injuries. She was unable to speak, but initially used letter cards and later was able to write down her version of what happened during the 11 p.m. shooting, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Police said the weapon shown by the juvenile during the robbery turned out to be a pellet gun that officers found in a dog food canister at the apartment. Investigators tracked social media accounts and cell phone records to locate Roney, Bloomington Police Department Lt. Lucas Tate said.
