Man arrested for shoving elderly Asian woman in unprovoked Oakland Chinatown attack

A man has been arrested in connection with an unprovoked attack on an elderly Asian woman in Oakland’s Chinatown earlier this month.

The incident, which was caught on surveillance camera, occurred as the woman was walking westbound on 9th Street toward Franklin Street on Jan. 10.

The 66-year-old victim, identified by KGO as Ms. Tse, was heading home after running errands and helping a friend at a nursing home when someone shoved her to the ground.

In the videos of the incident, Tse’s assailant can be seen trailing behind her before forcefully pushing her at an intersection.

A bystander helps Tse get up as the suspect flees northbound on Franklin Street.

Tse reportedly sustained minor scrapes on her legs, but she told KGO that she’s “OK” and “did not get hurt.”

On Monday, Oakland police confirmed that the suspect has been arrested.

He has not been identified yet, but authorities have previously described him as a Black man, approximately 35 years old and around 6 feet tall with a slim build.

The suspect is now facing charges of assault and cruelty to an elder or dependent adult, according to CBS SF Bay Area.

Tse told KGO that the arrest makes her feel “a bit safer,” but she wants people aware of her story to stay vigilant, especially with Lunar New Year celebrations underway.
