Man barricaded inside his Redland home for hours in standoff with Miami-Dade police

A man barricaded himself inside a southwest Miami-Dade County home for hours Monday, threatening to kill himself and prompting a large police response that included tactical and arson officers as well as the fire department.

What led to the man holing up inside the home on Southwest 190th Street in the Redland farm area in southwest Miami-Dade County remained unclear, but by the end of the day police decided to back off rather than continue the standoff.

Miami-Dade County police Special Response Team tactical officers, arson squad detectives, Miami-Dade’s Critical Response Team and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units all gathered outside of the large gated house as negotiators tried to talk the man, who has not been named, into coming outside.

“We’re trying to establish and maintain communication with this person,” Detective Angel Rodriguez said as the situation unfolded in the morning, adding police received the call shortly after 9 a.m.

Six Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pump trucks were parked on the street, and firefighters had their hoses hooked up to hydrants ready to extinguish flames if necessary.

Detective Andre Martin, another spokesman for the department, said the man, who was the only person inside the home, made threats that police have not specified that led officers who arrived on the scene first to determine “they needed an arson detective.”

“I’m not able to confirm the nature of the threats,” Martin said.

By mid afternoon officers and firefighters left the scene “to try and give the gentleman some breathing room to make the right decision,” Martin said.

Homes in the area of the standoff are spread out on large lots. Police did not evacuate neighbors, but the street in front of the man’s home was blocked for hours to keep people away.

By 5 p.m., police decided to leave the area for the day, but officers with the department’s Mental Health and Wellness Services will be following up with the man “to make sure he gets the resources he needs,” Martin said.

The man will not face charges for prompting the standoff, but officers with other units will be following up with the man to investigate “other facets” unrelated to what happened Monday, Martin said.
