Docs: Man arrested after using lit torch in standoff with police

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 41-year-old man allegedly barricaded himself inside an RV on Thursday, Feb. 22 in Las Cruces after law enforcement officials attempted to serve a warrant out of Colorado, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.

Court documents state Tyler Benjamin Hanson, 41, was wanted in the State of Colorado for charges including violation of a protection order, three counts of stalking and domestic violence.

New Mexico State Police, the Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to apprehend Hanson at the 4200 block of Siri Lane in Las Cruces.

Law enforcement officials approached the entrance of the property and were informed by neighbors that Hanson was inside an RV located within the area.

Court documents state law enforcement officials approached the RV, opened the screen door and announced to Hanson that he needed to exit.

Hanson was seen inside the RV and “refused to obey verbal commands” after multiple attempts, according to court documents.

Two taser deployments were then intiated but were unsuccesful and Hanson retrieved a “handheld propane torch and lit it,” according to court documents.

Law enforcement officials then approached the other side of the RV and removed a blanket that was covering the doorway.

Hanson was then seen with a handheld propane torch which was ignited and was in a “squatted-bladed stance” towards one of the officers, according to court documents.

Verbal commands were given to Hanson and he “continued to disobey the commands being given,” according to court documents.

Law enforcement officials formed a perimeter around the RV after Hanson refused to comply and barricaded himself inside, according to court documents.

Las Cruces Police Department’s SWAT was then contacted and assisted with a “safe extraction,” according to court documents.

Hanson was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with no bond.
