Man behind 7,000-mile horseback journey across U.S. stops in Gravette

GRAVETTE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — In an endeavor to reverse the stereotypes behind mustangs, Jake Harvath has kicked off what he calls the “Year of the Mustang,” a cross-country horse trek covering over 7,000 miles and 30 states within a year.

Harvath, who works as a horse trainer, was inspired by his love for mustangs and a desire to address the issue of over 50,000 wild horses held in government pens managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The diminishing habitat due to human overpopulation has led to the BLM’s intervention, leaving thousands of mustangs without homes.

Harvath says that he has wanted to make this journey since he was 16 but never got the chance to do it until now.

The journey began in Utah in September 2023, with Harvath accompanied by three wild horses named Bella, Denver, and Eddie. The trio will ride backcountry trails, highway sides, and country roads, covering a range of terrains to showcase the mustangs’ versatility.

Harvath aims to highlight the usefulness of the horses, especially considering the thousands held in government pens that are available for adoption through the BLM. His mission is to demonstrate how mustangs can be valuable assets through this extensive trip.

“I hope to be able to find homes for these animals. Yes, the training barrier for a wild horse can be challenging but once you gain their trust, you have a partner for life,” Harvath said.

Jake has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from people online and through word of mouth. From food and money to essentials for the horses, the outreach has been a testament to the power of community.

“One of the things that has surprised me the most about this trip is the outreach and the number of people that have come out to help us accomplish this goal. Mostly by word of mouth and online, I have been able to get so much help,” Harvath said.
