Man being booked in Virginia Beach city jail dies after medical emergency, sheriff’s office says

A 29-year-old man died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency while being booked in the Virginia Beach city jail, the sheriff’s office announced Monday.

Tramon L. Lane was arrested Saturday on five felony charges involving narcotics and firearm possession. While being processed into the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, Lane “experienced a medical emergency,” the Virginia Beach sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Deputy sheriffs, a registered nurse and Virginia Beach EMS personnel rendered aid and took Lane to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. Lane was pronounced dead at the hospital Saturday morning.

Lane is the second person to die while in city jail custody this year, according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Margie Hobbs. A 38-year-old woman died last month after attempting suicide in her cell, the sheriff’s office announced earlier this month.

The Norfolk medical examiner is determining the cause and manner of Lane’s death. No foul play is suspected, the sheriff’s office said.

Virginia Beach police, as well as the city’s sheriff’s office, are investigating Lane’s death, as the departments do with all in-custody deaths. The death was also reported to the Virginia Department of Corrections, as required.
