Man charged, accused of shooting 56-year-old Kansas City woman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man is now facing charges after prosecutors say he shot and killed a 56-year-old woman Monday.

Charlie Bowman has been charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm in the death of Ruth A. Bowman.

The deadly shooting happened just after 12:30 a.m. Monday at 50th Street and Bellefontaine Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found Ruth Bowman suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was soon pronounced deceased.

Officers found Charlie Bowman on scene, standing outside a vehicle parked across the street, court records say. Detectives found a pistol and shell casing near the vehicle, prosecutors said.

Surveillance footage shows one vehicle arriving on the scene and then another pulling up behind it. Court records say Ruth Bowman got out of the second vehicle and walked to the first car. Video shows her immediately fleeing behind the second car and falling to the ground, charging documents say.

Charlie Bowman then gets out of the car and runs after Ruth Bowman, court records say, carrying what appears to be a handgun.

Two witnesses told detectives they heard gunshots and then saw Ruth Bowman fall to the ground. They both identified the alleged shooter as Charlie Bowman, court detectives say.

When detectives spoke with Charlie Bowman, he said he remembered being with Ruth Bowman but couldn’t remember much after that until he was arrested.
