Man charged after assault at Covington Economy Inn

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in jail after he reportedly confessed to assaulting another man at an Economy Inn in Covington, Tennessee.

Covington Police responded to the Economy Inn on Highway 51 on Wednesday. Police reportedly found a victim with “severe” injuries to his face and neck.

Covington Police say the victim was initially treated on the scene by Tipton County EMS. He was later transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

According to police, investigators developed 39-year-old Steven Becton of Covington as a suspect. Officers reportedly took Becton into custody at the intersection of Peeler Road and Simonton Road.

Covington Police say Becton admitted to his role in the assault. He was taken to the Tipton County Jail and charged with aggravated assault.

Covington Police Chief Donna Turner says police are still investigating the assault. Turner says the motive remains “unclear” but that investigators have determined that alcohol was a factor.

Covington Police say Becton is still in jail with a $50,000 bond. He is expected to be in court on April 30.

The victim is reportedly still in the hospital in stable condition.
