Man charged with attempted homicide for August stabbing

Oct. 20—SHARON — A Sharon man was charged Friday with attempted homicide based on accusations that he stabbed a man over money.

Varian C. Callahan, 53, of 579 Baldwin Ave., was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and robbery after the incident at 4:21 p.m. Aug. 4 at his residence, police said.

Police said in a criminal complaint that Deshaun J. Emery entered the residence through the back door when Callahan asked him for money because he was having trouble with his finances.

Emery refused and tried to leave throuigh the back door, but Callahan blocked it.

Police said Callahan took out a kitchen knife and started slashing and stabbing Emery multiple times. Emery tried to defend himself but Callahan continued stabbing and slashing him, threatening to kill Emery. Emery fell onto the floor.

Emery was stabbed in the face, throat, arms and chest, police said.

Wounded, Emery shouted for help and asked someone to call 911 when Callahan noticed that the knife was bent and went to get another one. Police said Callahan told Emery he was getting a knife to kill him.

Emery rose from the floor and started fighting with Callahan. Police said Emery found a kitchen knife and started slashing back at Callahan before leaving through the front door.

Police arrived and Emery was flown by medical helicopter to a trauma hospital after losing a lot of blood, police said. He survived the attack. Callahan was taken to a local hospital and treated for stab wounds.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 3 before District Judge Travis P. Martwinski.

NOTE: All defendants are presumed innocent until proven or adjudicated guilty in court.
