Man charged with attempted murder after shooting outside Subway store

Police arrested a 22-year-old who reportedly shot a man after the two argued about parking outside the Subway restaurant off Kinser Pike in Bloomington Saturday afternoon.

The victim was shot once in the chest. He underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release.

"Officers arrived and located a 51-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest outside the restaurant near the dumpsters," the news release said. A BPD sergeant rendered first aid until medics arrived.

Sean M. Rivers, whose address is on West Northlane Drive, was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. He was held without bond on a preliminary charge of attempted murder.

The news release identified Rivers as an employee of the Subway restaurant where the incident occurred. A police summary of the incident said Rivers claimed the victim "charged and grabbed him."

Police said Rivers ran south from the scene after the 1:24 p.m. shooting in the 1800 block of North Kinser Pike. He was arrested half an hour later at a residence in the 500 block of West Northlane Drive.

According to witness and police accounts, Rivers and the victim, identified in a police summary as J.R. Dyer, apparently got into a verbal dispute about where Dyer had parked his vehicle.

Witnesses told police that after the two men argued, the victim "walked out of the restaurant, and Rivers was seen exiting the restaurant and walking towards the area where the witnesses last saw the victim," the news release said.

"Shortly thereafter, witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot, then observed Rivers come back into the restaurant, where he gathered his belongings and left the store on foot."
