Man charged in Bama Lanes mass shooting posts bail, released a second time

·1 min read

The suspect in the shooting of seven people at a Montgomery bowling alley is free on $860,000 bail after his original bail amount was increased.

Tory Johnson was released Saturday from the county jail, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Capt. Wesley Richerson confirmed. Johnson, 23, was charged with murder, two counts of first-degree assault and four counts of second-degree assault after 21-year-old Jeffrey Reed was killed and six others shot at Bama Lanes on Atlanta Highway early Jan. 9.

A magistrate originally set Johnson's bail at $270,000, the maximum for those charges under Alabama’s current bail guidelines. He posted that bond shortly after his arrest. District Attorney Daryl Bailey subsequently filed a motion requesting that Johnson's bail be increased to $2 million, a request supported by Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.

After an hour-long hearing, District Judge Tiffany McCord instead raised the bail to $860,000 and Johnson was taken into custody again Thursday. A video of the shooting was reviewed during the hearing.

"Much has been said and much has been done, but justice is not political,” McCord said to the victims and family members in attendance at the hearing. “Some of you may agree with my ruling, others may not. Regardless what the decision is, the answer is not more violence."

McCord raised the bail amounts from:

  • $150,000 to $500,000 in the murder charge

  • $30,000 to $120,000 for each first-degree assault charge

  • $15,000 to $30,000 for each second-degree assault charge.

Customers bowled at Bama Lanes as usual Saturday night, a week after the shooting, with Montgomery police and security on site.
