Man charged with child endangerment after shooting gun near kids in Colonial Heights

COLONIAL HEIGHTS – A Charles City County man faces several charges after he was arrested Tuesday night for firing a gun before a Fourth of July fireworks event.

Garryl L. Crawley, 59, was arrested after witnesses told police they saw him pull out a handgun and fire it six times into the air. He reportedly had three children with him, aged six months to three years.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 600 block of Southpark Boulevard as people gathered for a 9 p.m. fireworks show in the city. Six handgun shell casings and the gun itself were recovered from the scene.

The three children were released to the custody of a family member who was also at the scene.

No one was injured in the shootings.

Crawley was charged with three felony counts of felony child endangerment and one count each of public drunkenness, firing a gun in public and reckless discharge of a gun. He was set to appear in General District Court for arraignment Wednesday and is due in Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court July 27.

Additional charges may be filed against Crawley, who was being held at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County.
