Man charged in deadly wrong-way crash on I-35 in Johnson County

OLATHE, Kan. — A deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 35 has a man from New Jersey facing two murder charges in Johnson County, Kansas.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office accuses 27-year-old Matthew Karabas of first and second-degree murder as well as DUI and fleeing a police officer.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 3:20 a.m. Sunday, April 28, on northbound I-35, near Edgerton.

Karabas was traveling the wrong way on I-35 in the northbound lanes when he struck a semi truck head-on, according to KHP.

A passenger in Karabas’ vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Eric Diaz, of Melbourne, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Karabas was taken to Overland Park Regional with suspected serious injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to KHP.

The semi truck driver was not hurt.
