Man charged in fatal 2022 vehicle accident on Grant Avenue

Fifteen months after a Springfield woman died in a fatal three-way crash at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Lynn Street, criminal charges have come forward.

Isaac Andrew Johnston, 39, was charged Monday with driving while intoxicated causing the of death another, Lana Reed, who was Johnston's 51-year-old passenger. He also faces felony charges for injuring another person in the crash and driving with a suspended license after a series of previous drunk-driving offenses.

Johnston was booked into Greene County jail Tuesday afternoon and has a $25,000 court bond.

Springfield police said Johnston was driving a southbound Chevrolet Monte Carlo around 11:30 p.m. on July 9, 2022 and entered the intersection's center turn lane in an attempt to pass a Nissan Altima. Johnston's vehicle instead collided head-on with a Volkswagen, and the force reportedly caused the Monte Carlo to spin off and hit the Altima, running it off the road.

Johnston, Reed, and another passenger were all transported to the hospital, where Reed died of her injuries. Police obtained a warrant to get a sample of Johnston's blood after he reportedly refused their request.

Reed's daughter, Lindsey Bissick, and Tyrone White appear each filed vehicle injury lawsuits against Johnston last year, according to court records.
