Man charged in fatal wreck that killed Fayetteville mother

A man is facing misdemeanor charges in a car accident that killed a Fayetteville mother and injured her two children last month.

Nathan Thomas Kellon II, 39, also of Fayetteville, was cited Oct. 19 with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and a red light violation in the Oct. 3 wreck in the intersection of Cliffdale and Rim roads, the Fayetteville Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.

According to the accident report, Janeen Smith, 39, driving a 2018 Acura TLX, was northbound on Rim Road with a green light at the intersection when Kellon, eastbound on Cliffdale Road in a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, reportedly ran a red light, striking the Acura, the release said. The Jeep's speed was estimated at 61 mph in a 45 mph zone, the report states.

Smith, her two children and Kellon were all taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, police said. The children's injuries were described as minor; Kellon's injuries were described as serious, in the accident report. Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

The accident report indicates Kellon was tested for drugs and alcohol, the results of which are listed as pending.
