Man charged with first-degree murder in shooting outside Springfield tactical supply store

A Springfield man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 25-year-old employee Colin Loderhose outside of Anchor Tactical Supply on Wednesday morning.

Zachary Cano, 20, was charged with murder and several other felonies in connection with the shooting and a robbery at another gun store earlier that morning.

Jonathan Peace, who was arrested with Cano, was charged with stealing a gun from Anchor Tactical Supply on Tuesday (the day before the shooting).

Court documents say Cano and Peace went to Anchor Tactical Supply at about 9 a.m. on Thursday, but employees recognized the pair from the stealing incident the day before.

According to court documents, Loderhose confronted the pair, took their pictures and kicked them out of the store, pushing them a couple of times as seen on surveillance video footage from the store.

After being kicked out, court documents say Cano can be seen on camera pulling a gun out of his waistband out of the view of the victim before turning around and shooting Loderhose three times at close range. Loderhose fell to the ground, attempted to pull out his gun from a concealed holster but fell unconscious before he could return fire, investigators say.

Cano and Peace then fled the scene in a gold Chevrolet Impala, but a witness followed them and helped police find and arrest them in the parking lot of Kensington Park Apartments at Bennett Street and Kansas Expressway, according to court documents.

Police say they recovered multiple stolen weapons from the suspects' car.

Those weapons included the gun that had been stolen from Anchor Tactical the day before and a rifle that Cano and Peace had allegedly stolen from All About Guns earlier in the day on Wednesday. According to the court documents, during the All About Guns robbery, Cano struck the owner of the store in the face with the gun, causing him to need multiple stitches.

Upon his arrest, Cano allegedly told officers "this isn't my first murder. I already know" and made multiple claims of self-defense, stating that Loderhose had physically pushed them out of the store, flashed his gun at them and Cano feared for his life, according to court documents.

According to investigators, the video surveillance footage does not support a self-defense claim.

Peace, during his interview with investigators, allegedly admitted to stealing the weapons but said he had gone back to Anchor Tactical with Cano on Wednesday to return the weapon.

Cano is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, stealing a firearm and three counts of armed criminal action. He is being held in Greene County Jail and has no attorney listed as representing him.

Peace is charged with three counts of stealing firearms and is being held in jail with a $500,000 bond. He has no attorney listed as representing him at this time.

In response to the shooting, Anchor Tactical posted a memorial to Loderhose on their Facebook page.

"I am so beyond words today. Our very own Colin Loderhose has went to meet Jesus. He will forever be in my heart as an adventurous go getter," the post said. "I was thoroughly enjoying watching this young kid turn into a stellar man."

The store will be closed until further notice and they has set up a Go-Fund-Me to help support the Loderhose family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/9wetfc-colin-loderhose?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf%20share-flow-1&fbclid=IwAR1HWa_UuzSyjhd9x1N7cU7OHNQKo6zJHKPJlsFzncPIStR1aZAncd8kBtw
