A 56-year-old Sanilac Township man is facing charges related to an August crash that left two motorcyclists dead and others injured in Sanilac County.

Rescue crews responded to a crash involving four motorcycles and one vehicle in Forester Township about 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 6.

Jon Paul Marentette was arraigned in December on five misdemeanor charges: two counts of moving violation causing death, two counts of moving violation causing serious impairment of body function, and one count of motor vehicle operate-without-security.

His bond was set at $20,000. Marentette has a pre-trial hearing set for Jan. 30. His lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

Deputies along with the Port Sanilac Fire Department, Delaware Township Fire Department, Sanilac EMS, and Croswell EMS responded to the scene on M-25 near Stone Road.

Police have said a 2008 Chevrolet Uplander being driven by Marentette was southbound on North Lakeshore Road when the vehicle crossed the center line and side swiped a 1999 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle driven by a 67-year-old Shelby Township man. That motorcyclist was able to stay upright and come to a stop shortly after the collision, the sheriff department said.

After striking the first motorcycle, the Uplander continued south and hit a 2020 Harley Davidson driven by a 55-year-old Berkley man. That collision caused the bike to fall on the roadway and hit a 2021 Harley Davidson Road Glide that was traveling directly next to it, causing the 2021 Harley Davidson to fall on its side and the driver, a 42-year-old Southgate man, and his passenger, a 39-year-old Southgate woman, to separate from the bike, the sheriff department has said.

Police said the Uplander continued south and struck another 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven by a 67-year-old Warren man. That motorcyclist was ejected from his bike and landed in a ditch.

The Warren man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Berkley man was transported to McLaren Lapeer Regional Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police said.

All other drivers and passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
