Man charged with multiple counts of attempted murder in Longmont shooting

Sep. 27—A man accused of shooting another man in the face has been charged with multiple counts of first-degree attempted murder.

Julio Quintana, 31, was charged Tuesday with one count of attempted first-degree murder after deliberation and four counts of attempted first-degree murder — extreme indifference.

He was also charged with first-degree assault, two counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, three counts of felony menacing and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

According to an arrest affidavit, police said Quintana was the passenger in a vehicle with three other people after a night of drinking in Denver at about 2 a.m. Saturday.

A deputy tried to pull over the driver after noticing his erratic driving nearing the Longmont area, but the driver did not stop.

A passenger in the car threatened to shoot the driver unless he stopped. When the driver did not stop, Quintana reportedly took the gun and fired one shot through the windshield in the area of 600 E. Mountain View Ave.

The driver reportedly pulled the car over and then got out and ran. Police say Quintana fired four to five more shots at the fleeing driver, hitting him once in the face. The man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries but survived.

The other shots went into nearby homes, but there were no other injuries reported.

The attempted murder after deliberation, first-degree assault and one of the menacing charges all cite the driver as the named victim. The two other felony menacing counts name the two other passengers as victims.

The four extreme indifference charges name residents of the home or homes reportedly struck by Quintana's shots, alleging that Quintana, "under circumstances evidencing an attitude of universal malice manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life generally, knowingly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of death to persons other than himself."

Quintana, who remains in custody on $500,000 bond, is set for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 17.
